Robert D. Byrne, 88 of Duxbury passed away April 14, 2015. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy M. (Noguiera) Byrne; loving father of Joyce Mattern and her husband Michael of Duxbury; Kelly Brady and her husband Matthew of Marshfield; Robert S. Byrne and his wife Diana of Calif.; and the late Terence Byrne. He was the grandfather of Martin Mattern, Megan Hughes, Jennifer Mattern, Lauren Brady, Jeff Brady, Devin Byrne and Emma Byrne; and Great-grandfather of Liam, Rhiannon and Cameron.
“Byrnesy” was a lifelong resident of Duxbury. He served on the Duxbury Police force for 40 years and proudly wore Badge No. 1. Along with his many duties as a Patrolman, Robert was also the Motor Officer, and Prosecutor for the Town of Duxbury, he retired in 1991. Early years in Duxbury he worked as a Plumber’s helper for Wirt Plumbing. He also delivered oil for Eben N. Briggs who was the former Fire Chief of Duxbury. Robert was a US Army veteran serving during WW II and was a 68-year member of the Duxbury American Legion Post 223. He and his wife Dorothy enjoyed their early years participating in minstrel shows with other legion members. He was an avid boater and family man. A celebration of Robert’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on April 24 at the Duxbury Senior Center 10 Mayflower St, Duxbury, MA. Contributions in Robert’s memory may be made to the Duxbury Police Dare Fund – Jr. Academy 155 Mayflower St, Duxbury, MA. 02332 or to the Duxbury Fire Ambulance Fund 668 Tremont St. Duxbury, MA. 02332.
