Due to a recent abundance of strep-related illnesses in Duxbury, the board of health will meet to discuss ways to help minimize the risk of exposure.
One of those illnesses is PANDAS, Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. PANDAS is used to describe a subset of children and adolescents who experience encephalitic- like onset of neuropsychiatric
symptoms following an infection such a Strep. With this infection, antibodies created to fight the infection become misdirected and attack a small area of the brain.
The Board of Health will hold a meeting on Thursday, Feb.20 at 7 p.m. in the Mural Room at the Town Hall that will feature PANDAS expert Margaret Chapman, who will discuss the overwhelming number of strep-related cases in Duxbury and the school system.
