The Duxbury boys’ indoor track team went into the Patriot League Championships on Saturday hoping to fatten the list of Dragons heading to the state championships in two weeks. It took the entire meet, but they added four more when the 4x400-meter relay team rose to the occasion despite having to make a last-minute substitution.
James Giumetti, Chad Doyle, Christian Dow and CJ Ruff ran the 4x4 in 3 minutes and 41 seconds, four seconds faster than the state-qualifying mark of 3:45. Duxbury’s regular 4x4 roster features sophomore Andrew Borg running the third leg of the relay, but Borg was a late scratch due to illness. Head coach Greg Seery subbed in Dow, and the senior made the most of the chance to extend his final indoor track season.
“He comes to practice everyday and is really excited to be on the team,” Seery said of Dow. “He wanted to qualify for States and they each ran wonderful legs.”The 4x4 team will join the 4x200 relay team at the Division IV State Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center on Feb. 16. In addition to the two relay teams, the Dragons will send Ruff, Borg, Doyle and Giumetti in individual events. Giumetti will run the 55-meter dash while Borg, Doyle and Ruff will all run the 300-meter dash. “We’re very excited to have four individuals qualify and two relays,” Seery said. “I’m going to see how the 4x4 ranks in Massachusetts and hopefully that team can get a medal and move on to All States.”
