A local volunteer and education advocate has been named Democrat of the Year.
Mary Jane Noel was given the honor on Friday, Oct. 18 at the South Shore Democratic Caucus Awards dinner held at the South Shore Country Club in Hingham. Noel served for six years on the Duxbury School Committee and served as the education chair for the
Marshfield/Duxbury League of Women Voters. She also worked with the superintendent of schools to encourage candidates to collect signatures on nomination forms at the schools.
In 1997, Noel co-found- ed the Duxbury Community Council, a grass roots organization whose purpose was to give citizens tools to influence local schools. The council functioned for 12 years, becoming a training ground for future school committee members who were committed to the principle of an open school system.
In the political world, Noel worked on campaigns for Gerry Studds, Michael Dukakis, John Kerry, Deval Patrick, Barack Obama, Elizabeth Warren and Josh Cutler.
