The girls’ volleyball team entertained the Silver Lake Lakers last Monday afternoon to start the week and put on a show, dominating the visitors and winning in consecutive sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-22).

Duxbury jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead behind the force of sophomore Emma Bartlett and senior Kelly Dame. The Lakers got a point on a poor serve by Duxbury, but the Dragons countered and extended their lead to 12-4.  The hosts used their momentum and continued to gradually extend the lead to 15-7 on a Mackenzie Bright spike.

The visitors went on a run and got within five. But from here on out it was all Duxbury, as junior Catherine Harrison had a monster spike to spearhead a five-point run. With the game standing at 20-12, Bartlett’s serving talent scored five points for the Dragons. The Lakers were able to score two points in the span, but Bartlett shut the door and ended the game at 25-14.

The second set started out polar opposite, as Silver Lake got the first point on a serve. Duxbury countered with an artsy drop shot by senior Nicki Vetsch. After trading points and highlights, the Lakers went up by two at 8-6.

Duxbury was back on the comeback trail sparked by two great serves, leading to a 14-9 lead. Vetch stepped up, putting Duxbury up again with a nice play at the net. With the score 15-9, the home team smelt blood and extended its lead to 22-10. Junior Kitty Hunter followed up with a high arching drop shot and the Dragons finished the set behind the power of Harrison and the grace of their services to win 25-15.

The girls faced some adversity in the third set, having to dig themselves out of a 0-6 hole. They did so with exemplary teamwork and chemistry scoring eight straight points largely behind the strength of Dame.

After some back and forth action the score stood at 10-9 in favor of Silver Lake. Duxbury scored twice and then the Lakers matched them point for point.  With Silver Lake scoring and Duxbury doing there best to counter, the score stood at 13-17 Silver Lake.

After a graceful play at the net by Bartlett, the Dragons were still down 15-17.  Senior Katelyn Turock recognizing the importance of the situation stepped up huge and delivered a mind blowing hustle play, diving out of bounds and somehow keeping the possession alive.

Trailing 17-20, Emma  “Clutch” Bartlett stepped up to the service line and delivered, unleashing monster serve after monster sever and bringing the Dragons back from defeat for a 25-22 win.

“It felt great to get the win in a last second fashion,” said Coach Pam Thomas. “The girls had to bring it back in the third and Emma Bartlett was great on the serving line. “

The girls used the game as a springboard and are still perfect after 3-0 shutout wins over Hanover and Middleboro on the road that put their record at 5-0.
