The Lady Dragons softball team opened its 2012 season in grand fashion with a convincing 9-2 non-league win over Marshfield last Thursday at home.
Junior hurler Micaela Lannon fanned six Rams while holding the visitors to just four hits. She got the support she needed early when junior outfielder Alex Leaverton doubled in the bottom of the first and came home on an RBI single by classmate Erin Gallagher.
Duxbury blew the game wide open in the bottom of the third inning when it sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs. Timely hits by juniors Christina Curley and Caroline McSherry, along with two RBI from senior co-captain Madi Duddy gave Duxbury a 6-1 lead.
Marshfield threatened in the top of the sixth inning, but Lannon pitched her way out of the jam. In the bottom of the sixth, Gallagher led off with a single and Curley followed with a home run blast over the fence in left center field. Sophomore Brianna Connolly added two hits to the Duxbury cause.
After taking on Plymouth North and Quincy to start the week, Duxbury will travel to Silver Lake on Thursday afternoon at 3:45 before a 10-day vacation for spring break.
