The Duxbury cross-country teams finished up their Patriot League schedules at Randolph HS last Tuesday in preparation for yesterday’s Patriot League championships. The boys’ team (8-2) finished in a three-way tie with Pembroke and Hingham for second place during the regular season, while powerhouse Whitman-Hanson cruised to a perfect 10-0 record.
The boys finished the season with a 20-35 win over Randolph, as Jonathan McKinley won in a time of 15:15, followed by Billy Jewel (2nd/15:18), Mark Brust (4th/15:53), Paul Dacey (6th/15:55) and Greg Bray (7th/15:56). Randolph’s Gerard McDonald finished third (15:21) and teammate Devlin Crawford was fifth (15:54).
The girls also had a successful final league meet with a sweep of Randolph 15-45. Robin Radar paced the girls in 18:48, with Anne Steele (2nd/19:55) Lauren Bittrich (3rd/20:02), Maddie MacKenzie (4th/20:46) and Liz Doherty (5th/20:55) right behind. The win put the girls at the .500 mark with a 5-5 record.
The team will now get ready for the MIAA Division III Championships on November 8 at Franklin Park in Boston. A top-five finish will send the Dragons into the State Championships at the same venue.
“We have a good shot at sneaking into the top five,†said Duxbury boys’ coach Mark Dunn. “There are two or three teams that are a notch ahead of us like Bishop Feehan, Oliver Ames, and Wellesley. But we’re a little thin and we need our top five guys to run well if we want to make the cut.â€
