Eugene Hall Libby, 93, was born on Dec. 29, 1921 and died Sunday, July 13, 2014. Born and raised in Belmont, only son of the late Eugene and Olive Libby, he served in the 9th Infantry Division in WWII where he was awarded the Purple Heart. After graduating from Boston University, he moved to Rutland, Vt. where he started his family and was the marketing manager for Okemo Mountain. He later raised his children on Cape Cod where he worked for Crosby Yacht Yard as a yacht broker. The latter part of his life was spent with Jean Karlen in Essex where they loved daily trips up the seacoast and spent countless hours on the water. They both had a love for antiques and worked at the White Elephant Shop in Essex for years.
Mr. Libby was known by all for his warm and friendly smile, classic New England features, and quote(s) of the day. He leaves his daughter Joanna Bishop, son-in-law Jeffrey and grandchildren Emma and Cameron of Duxbury. He was predeceased in death by his late wife Geneva Libby and Jean Karlen. He was also the father of the late Christian Libby.
The family wishes to thank all at the South Shore Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in Rockland for the great care they provided to Gene in his later years of life. A private family Mass will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to the Wounded Warriors Project at woundedwarriorproject.org.
