When Bruce Barrett first said he wanted us to fly him to Afghanistan to
cover the grand opening of the Zabuli School I'll admit I was a bit
skeptical.
“We don't have much of a foreign correspondent budget, Bruce,“ I joked, hoping to sidestep the issue.
But Bruce had a secret weapon –– Razia Jan.
Razia is well known in Duxbury, and beyond, for her humanitarian
efforts for her native Afghanistan. With the help of the Duxbury Rotary
Club, Razia spearheaded the effort to build this school for girls in
village of Kabul.
Razia was excited to have Bruce come along to cover the school’s grand
opening. Together Bruce and Razia were a hard team to say no to.
I slept on the matter and decided it was too good a story to pass up.
The next day I handed over the company credit card and Razia took care
of the rest.
Bruce leaves tomorrow and returns the following Wednesday. He's already
penned a half dozen blog entries and is planning to file updates as
often as he can reach a computer. Once he returns he’ll be writing a
comprehensive piece about the entire trip.
We’ve set up a special area of our web site for the project. You can reach it zabuli.duxburyclipper.com (leave off the “www”)
I’m looking forward to learning more about this project and following Bruce’s journey. I hope you do to.
